The End of Summer Holidays
The summer holidays are drawing to a close and I reflect on a wonderful summer's trout fishing, despite the La Nina weather conditions bringing rain and wind. Tomorrow I must return to school and I can at last say I have begun my fishing blog even if the promised mid-holiday start never happened. I have also started a blog for my class at St Mary's School Rotorua New Zealand. For anyone who doesn't know, Rotorua is a city of 65,000 and is a trout fisherman's paradise, with easy access available to a huge range of trout fishing opportunities on lake and river, all open to the general public. Licences are cheap and trout are plentiful, and although the big trout opportunities have somewhat diminished, there are still many big trout around up to 201b (9kg)+ to be had if you know where to find them. Rotorua is a volcanic region, so the bounty of lakes is due to the amount of craters around, and the steady rainfall accounts for the manystreams and rivers. This summer I beagan to master trolling and fly fishing from a kayak. I have installed a cheap fish finder, experimented with techniques and tried a range of waters, generally catching plenty of fish up to 5lb (2.4kg) everywhere. The huge bonus is that I have also lost about 6kg (13lbs) in weight and feel as fit as a fiddle. Hopefully tomorrow I can start teaching my kids to use similes such as that in there writing and maybe get them interested in my kayaking and fishing stories. To be continued....... The 2 brown trout I am holding in my profile picture are 16lb (7.25kg) and 13lb (6kg) caught by me on opening morning 1st October 2005 - the date of my own personal world cup final type moment when all my childhood angling dreams came true. The capture of the second, and smaller trout, was caught on film and can be seen on the 'Destination Trout' DVD, still on the market in NZ I think - if you want to see a grown man embarrass himself with his joy.
